Joe DeRose manages the AAR’s technology infrastructure, including the website and the various databases used by the executive office staff – most notably those for membership records and Annual Meeting planning. He particularly enjoys working out new mechanisms to collect, display, and share data (such as the OP3 system used for Annual Meeting submissions) and is thrilled to work at the AAR, where he has found excellent resources and a receptive audience. Joe has worked since 1988 at Emory University, where the AAR is based, and was hired by the AAR in 1999 to develop programs and systems that were previously managed by Scholars Press.
Joe was also born at Emory University, and has spent his entire life in Atlanta. Proud to come from a city with such an auspicious civil rights heritage, Joe has volunteered extensively in work for justice – specifically in lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgendered equality and in recognition and access for persons with disabilities. He is therefore honored to have been selected as staff liaison to the AAR task forces serving these respective two groups. As a committed environmentalist, Joe is pleased that Atlanta’s growth allows him to live without a car – getting to work as a bicycle commuter – and that the AAR’s relationship with Emory University rewards this commitment with free monthly transit passes and free membership in the Flexcar shared vehicle program.
